Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jane Smiley will be speaking about her new novel, "Private Life,'' a historical work about one woman's life and (unhappy) marriage, from the 1880s until World War II, at a benefit for the troubled Pacific Grove Library. While the Carmel Valley-based write is most famous for1992's A Thousand Acres, a modern update of King Lear adapted into a movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange, her other novels include Horse Heaven and Ten Days In The Hills. Her critical work includes 2005's Thirteen Ways of Looking at the Novel, and she has been a writer and essayist for the Huffington Post and Harper's Magazine, among many other publications. Fiercely dedicated to her craft, she is no less fierce in her political convictions. A private reception takes place 3:15-5pm at Pacific Grove Public Library. [PW]
2pm. Chautauqua Hall, Central and 16th, Pacific Grove. $10. 648-5730. http://www.ci.pg.ca.us/recreation/chautauqua.htm.
