This 1927 Warner Bros. American musical film, starring Al Jolson, ushered in the age of the talkie with Vitaphone sound synched with the action. Jolson plays--and sings as--Jakie Rabinowitz, a young man who defies his father's devout Jewish faith to become a jazz singer, but must reconcile his career with his heritage. The blackface Jolson wears looks like an anamoly now, not unlike D.W. Griffin's race-baiting Birth of a Nation, and its debut was rocky at first, but it's considered a pillar of film history. [WR]
Sunset. Outdoor Forest Theater, Santa Rita and Mountain View, Carmel. $6/general; $4/student, youth, senior. 626-1681.
