There's blues in the daytime, among thousands of people, sitting from afar. Then there's blues at night, with a smallish crowd, up close enough to see the sweat on a musician's brow. That's how Sly's handles this adjunct blues weekend. It starts Friday with Arizona blues musician Jimmie McElroy, who's played with legendary music figures like "Cannonball" Adderly, Oliver Nelson, Gladys Knight, Solomon Burke, this weekend marking his fourth time on the Monterey Bay Blues Festival stage. Saturday, Big Cat Tolefree, from Oaktown, brings his big man voice to sinewy and muscular tunes. His "Bayou Rhythm" starts with licks that sound amusingly like REM's "The One I Love"—check it out. But they get down. Sunday it all goes down with JC Smith Band hosting the famed Blues Festival after party jam, with who knows who showing up to sit in with each other and just play. [WR]
9pm-1am Fri-Sun. Sly McFly's, 700 Cannery Row, Suite A, Monterey. 649-8050.
