After a polished and robust debut with David Mamet's caustic November, the reborn Magic Circle Theatre segues to another intelligent comedy, Dead Man's Cell Phone, by ascending playwright Sarah Ruhl, whose The Clean House was a finalist for a Pulitzer. A cell phone rings incessantly on a table in a quiet cafe until Jean, at a nearby table, decides to answer it. She discovers that the man the cell phone belongs to is dead—but that's only the first revelation she will discover as she delves further into the former life of the man. The New York Times called Ruhl's tragi-comedy, here directed by Robin McKee, a "hallucinatory poetic fantasy." [WR]
