This one-night event brings the likes of India.Arie, Maria Bello, Diane Birch, Michael Franti, Dr. Helene Gayle, Angelique Kidjo, , Marisa Tomei, and Sarah, Duchess of York to Century Cinemas across the country. The music and performance is inspired by Kristof's and fellow Pulitzer Prize Winner Sheryl WuDunn's recent best-selling book Half the Sky, the two New York Times journalists' passionate perspective on womens' rights delivered through personal accounts of women in Africa and Asia. The book also contains a pragmatic note, calling for the fulfillment of women's progress as a key to economic development in developing countries. The performance, sponsored by CARE International, coincides with International Womens' Day, and features musical events and a short film premiere by Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone. (See Onstage story.)
