Month three in the Lighthouse Cinema's four-month classic--and nothing but--film fest keeps up the high caliber quality. March 4 and 5 brings On the Waterfront front and center. Directed by Elia Kazan, scored by Leonard Bernstein, written by Budd Schulberg and starring a cast equal to that high-powered talent--Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger, Karl Malden and Lee J. Cobb--the gritty story of corruption in the lives of the little guy was nominated for 12 Oscars, and won eight of them. Billy Wilder was a maverick. Sarah Palin, you are no Billy Wilder. His 1959 comedy Some Like it Hot, playing March 11-12, starring a brilliantly manic Jack Lemmon, a devilishly cheeky Tony Curtis and a sultry and vivacious Marilyn Monroe, tackled gender roles before Hollywood even knew what that was. Curtis and Lemmon, in drag, stow away with an all-girl big band on board a train to escape some mafia types, and the giddiness and hijinx don't let up for a minute. March 18-19 brings...ahhh...Casablanca. What can be said that hasn't already been said? Rick, Ilsa, Captain Renault, Ferrari, Victor Laszlo, Major Strasser. When released in 1942, it was supposed to be studio production line fodder--instead it became an American film icon. Bogie. Yes. March 25-26 they screen His Girl Friday, American Film Institute's 19th top film comedy of all time (the list does change, though), and one of the shiniest examples of old-time Hollywood dialogue and wit. Walter Burns (Cary Grant) and Hildy (Rosalind Russell) are newspaper journalists looking to nab the big story. Well, she is at least; Walter's looking to nab Hildy's hand in marriage. Sparkling, charming, funny and fun. [WR]
