Certificates of merit, cash and poetry books await as rewards at the end of this county-wide high school poetry competition; but we all know that the journey is its own reward. High-schoolers are encouraged to find inspiration in their "neighborhood, parks, schoolyard, backyard and wild places" to convert into poems, which will be picked for distinction during a ceremony 2pm May 1 at Monterey Public Library, held in conjunction with the Cherry's high school art exhibit, Thinking Out Loud. Rules: write in English, Spanish or both; must be a Monterey County high school student; three typed poems per author, no longer than 40 lines, with name, address and phone number. Otherwise, there are no restrictions on content, style, form or metrical device. Poems are to be postmarked (Carl Cherry Center for the Arts, PO Box 863, Carmel, CA 93921) by March 19. [WR]
