Send the kids off off to bed; a David Mamet play is coming to Carl Cherry. The prolific and profane author of The Old Religion and Bambi Vs. Godzilla; playwright of Glengarry Glen Ross and Boston Marriage, which the Cherry produced last March; director of Heist with Philip Seymore Hoffman and Ethan Hawke; and more works than probably he could keep track of examines Hollywood's perpetual battle between art and commerce. And by "examines," I mean attacks and wrestles with like a tiger with a waterbuffalo, in his signature pugnacious style, in the form of Hollywood producers Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox, who must decide on whether to promote another blockbuster waste of film or an adaptation of an important novel. The office temp mediates. On Broadway, this play about the movie industry has attracted movie industry heavies like Kevin Spacey, Jeff Goldblum, Joe Mantegna, Alicia Silverstein, William H. Macy and Raul Esparza, who won a Tony for Best Lead Actor. Conrad Selvig directs long-time locals James Brady, Ron Genauer and Taylor Thorngate in the fast-paced action. It runs until March. 21. [WR]
