Rossini's lesser known gem is based on the epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso, and stars Soprano Renée Fleming as Armida. The Damascus femme fatale uses her beauty and sorcery to weaken Christian Crusaders. The plan backfires when she falls in love with the Rinaldo (Tenor Lawrence Brownlee), leader of the Frankish army and her enemy, and uses demonic powers to create a pleasure palace for him. Rinaldo enjoys the beautiful scenery, nymphs and pantomimes until he comes to his senses and flees her. In the end, the powers of hell cannot bring him back and Armida destroys her pleasure palace in a rage. Fleming holds her own in this fascinating story of girl power, starring opposite nine different tenors, with Tony Award Winner Mary Zimmerman directing. The encore on May 19 closes out this season's Met Live at the Opera. [MC]
