World champion ballroom dancer Pierre Dulaine, depicted in the film Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas and documentary Mad Hot Ballroom, developed the Dancing Classroom curriculum to teach elementary kids not just the foxtrot, merengue, tango, waltz and swing, but to intill disclipline, critical thinking, esteem and cultural exchange. Picked up as an adjunct program in 80 classrooms nationwide, the local chapter, formed with guidance by Ingrid Tower of Shall We Dance, puts on this youth ballroom dance competition for elementary students to strut their stuff. After the Sherwood hall premilinaries on April 20, the semi-finals move to Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center on May 11, with the grand finale coming back to Salinas May 17.
