This nonprofit festival of the visual arts lets the public see art in action, from start to finish, in events like Plein Air and Sculpture in the Park, Quick Draw, even Kids Art Day, Sculptors Withindoors. It's based out of Devendorf Park, where the information kiosk serves to give people their bearings, but spills out onto Mission Street and across the Peninsula. On Thursday, sculptors and plein air painteres begin a new piece of work, from scratch, which they will continue to work on over the weekend and submit for judging and auction at the end. So the sight of lone painters and their easels will pop up in unexpected (and expected) places.
Friday, 2-5pm, music jumps into the mix, adding an aural element to the visual goings on. Throughout Saturday, things climax with public view and bidding of plein air parintings 10am-6pm and the awards ceremony at 5pm, with auctions at 6pm. 11am-5:30pm Saturday reprises the live music in the park and at 1-4pm Kids Make Art Day makes its debut. Sunday is more of the same, with Quick Draw winners firing up their chalk and graphite one more time, sculpture in the park continuing, and live music by the Rotary Jazz Club Band winding things down noon-3pm.
Noon Thu; 10am-5:30pm Fri-Sat; 10am-4pm Sun. Carmel, Carmel, Devendorf Park, and various locations throughout Monterey County, Carmel. Free. 2010@carmelartfestival.org. http://www.carmelartfestival.org.
