Champions for peace, Monterey Peace & Justice Center, enlist the aid of Nancy Hanawi and Oscar Goodman, who deveolped and taught peace and conflict resolution at U.C. Berkeley, in a series that turns the lofty idea into a tangible goal. First, on April 17, they define the terms, positing that "people tend to think about peace as the absence of war, just as they think about health as the absence of illness," and suggesting there's much more to it than that. On May 1 they explore intriguing questions like if the fundamental nature of humans is violence or compassion. May 15, the topics get even more intriguing: Are women more peaceful? How does war related to gender? Are some cultures more peaceful than others? The fourth and final workshop is a call to action plan that suggests ways people can propogate peace. [WR]
