It is the greatest thistle known to man. It is a multifaceted metaphor for life (i.e.: things taste better after a little work). And it is undeniably ours. It is, of course, the artichoke, and this is its annual Castroville close-up. Thankfully organizers say they are rededicating themselves to the culinary art of the choke (get 'em steamed, grilled, fried, sauteed and baked in a beautiful cupcake), but nevertheless the eats are but the beginning. Here come cooking demos, wine and microbrew tastings, a pre-1972 car show, a Sunday parade, 5 and 10K trots, an all-you-can-eat pancake pigout, field tours and agro-art sculpture contests. The Chicano All Stars and the Sledge Girls Band headline two days (and two stages) worth of field-fresh live music. [MCA]
10am-6pm Sat; 10am-5pm Sun. Castroville, Castroville, $10/adult; $5/child 4-12; free/3 and under; $5/military. 831-633-2465 or www.artichoke-festival.org.
