It should be a retro rockin' good time in Monterey for those who fancy both classic, custom cars and the music of bygone times, as the Monterey Rock and Rod festival kicks off Friday nigh with a Sock Hop featuring the house band the Yard Dogs. The next night, things really heat up, with the advent of The Shirelles, one of the great girl bands ("Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,'' "Soldier Boy''), featuring Beverly Lee (though not, sadly, former member Shirley Alston) and Freddy "Boom Boom'' Cannon of "Palisades Park'' fame and local bands Memory Lane, August Sky, Trusting Lucy, The Hot Rods Band and Los HIgh Tops. Sunday, May 23, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys, the Chicano All-Stars and Yard Dogs are scheduled to wind things down. The Festival is partnering with Hyatt Regency for a raffle benefiting Gateway Center of Monterey County, a non--profit helping the developmentally disabled. The event features hundres hundreds of 1972 and older classic, hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, trucks, and customs cars. (See Music story.) [PW]
