The school's Division of Social, Behavioral and Global Studies assembles films by Steven Heape and Chip Richie, panels and presentations to celebrate this heady week. It starts with the film Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School, which examines the U.S. government's cultural brainwashing of Indian kids, which is shown noon-2pm Thursday; The Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy is screened 6-8pm Monday, about the forced tragedy in which the Cherokee Nation was marched to U.S. government sanctioned Oklahoma; the documentary Don't Get Sick After June: American Indian Healthcare is a documentary about the Indian Health Service, from the POV of Native Americans (6-8pm Tue); on Wednesday, Cari Herthel speaks on "Protecting Sacred Sites in Monterey" while Lorraine Escobar addresses "Worthless Paper, Shattered Identities" in a dual lecture noon-2pm, followed by Dr. Amy Lonetree "Visualizing Native Survivance: Encounters with my Ho-Chunk Ancestors in the Photographs of Charles Van Schaick, 1879-1925" 6-9:30pm. It wraps at CSUMB's Music Hall 4-5:20pm Thursday, Nov. 18, with child advocate Dr. Paul Steele talking on "Reflections on Children Living on Tribal Lands." [WR]
