Salinas native Juan Antonio Ramos won the playwright lottery when he sent his script to Western Stage's artistic director, Jon Patrick Selover, who liked it so much that the Hartnell College theater company is premiering it on their renovated Main Stage for the holidays. Based on Charles Dickens' classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the three ghosts, Ramos has set his take in a poor Mexican town in the 1800s, with many of the lead roles handed to women (to reflect Mexico's matriarchal culture), social critique in the form of class and race commentary, while retaining the family-friendly holiday charm. It runs to Dec. 5. [WR]
8pm Fri-Sat; 2pm Sun. Western Stage Main Stage, 411 Central Ave., Salinas. $30/adult; $21/junior, senior, military. 755-6816. http://www.westernstage.com.
