For anyone trying to figure out exactly what "coffee house" music sounds like; look no further. This Pittsburgh outfit is the epitome of the cappuccino sipping bohemian street poet genre made popular in the mid 90's (I wouldn't have been surprised to see them playing as extras somewhere in the background of "Reality Bites). Following suit from another coffee house band (and fellow Pennsylvanians) Matt Pond PA, Sound of Voices tend to have a very Autumn-minded sound, playing quaint indie pop rock songs about the leaves changing colors and cute girls with red hair. The vocals are poured through a shy guy filter and come out almost as whispers and under-one's-breath confessions (summoning Badly Drawn Boy). The name fits them perfectly as all you get from the music is a hint before it bashfully turns away, holding on to the secret it was dying to say. [LC]
9pm. Jose's Lounge Underground , 638 Wave St., Monterey. $5. 406-0127, 655-4419.
