El Teatro Campesino has been performing La Virgen del Tepeyac since 1971 and now its back. The play is a dose of culture with Aztec dances, Mexico history, and Catholic rituals. The story follows Juan Diego as he tries to convince the religious sector that the Virgin Mary has appeared to him to relay a message of peace in 1531. The Virgin Mary backs up Juan Diego’s claims through miracles and apparitions. The musical play takes place at Mission San Juan Bautista and is adapted from the 18th century anonymous monk. The play is in Spanish but the production values and actors make it easy to follow along and a libretto is provided for English speaking audiences. Take part in this historic play and watch how the religious birth of indigenous Mexico got started. [EC]
