Lock up your daughters and hide your wives. This Restoration-era bawdy play by William Wycherley was banned for almost 200 years for its sexual dialogue and double entendres, and unabashed libido lustiness. It's almost crudely simple: Harry Horner (see ?) spreads the word in 1670s London society that he's impotent, thereby relaxing women's defenses against his advances. A bit of the ol' reverse psychology. At the same time, a newlywed couple arrive, the female the naive "country wife" being circled by ravenous city wolves. Despite its frank sex jokes, Wycherley's work has finally garnered respect from academics for its dexterous use of language and critical eye for satire. It's kind of ironic that this play, directed by Kenneth Kelleher, is running in a theater on Casanova Street. Players, take note. [WR]
