First the Met showed the way. Now, the San Francisco Opera, owners of the first permanent hi-def broadcast-standard video production facility in the U.S., follows suit. Though the Met broadcast their operas via movie screens for a cover charge, SF Opera does so freely via KQED. The first of the four Thursday opera performances will be Puccini's cross-cultural love story, Madama Butterfly, staged at the War Memorial Opera House, 8pm Thursday, Aug. 26. It's followed Sept. 2 by Mozart's Don Giovanni, about that rascally womanizer Don Juan, then back to Puccini with La Rondine Sept. 16, and closing with Saint-Saens' Samson and Dalilah Sept. 23. As a bonus, the camera will take viewers backstage for interviews with key members of the production. [WR]
