There’s a growing trend in indie music now to sound like you live in the woods, take psychadelic drugs while making music and only come out to tour. The Soft Hills are quite cozy in this niche but unlike most of their hipster peers, it never sounds labored. Their music ebbs and flows like waves, rustles like tree leaves and it all seems to flow so naturally, without a thought to the current musical climate. This is the music the Seattle quartet would have been making if they were around ten years ago. At there’s best (like the star-gazing slow dance number “Silver Wings”) they resemble a young, rural version of The Flaming Lips, (which many have pointed out). Where Wayne Coyne is having Christmas on Mars, The Soft Hills are celebrating the season solstices on Earth. [LC]
