The Hyatt's been the go-to spot for classic jazz performances and jams for years. And it blossoms as an intimate, swanky affair just down the road from the Jazz Festival. Thursday's kick-off party at 7:30pm is lead by guitar maestro Calvin Keyes, whose played with Ahmad Jamal, backed by Lee Durley on vocals, Dan Robbins on bass and David Morwood on drums. Top notch. It gets better, though. Friday's Jazz at Sunset gig (4:30pm) puts bassist/vocalist Nat Johnson, pianist Marshall Otwell, who recorded a Grammy-nominated album with Dizzy Gillespie, and the Hyatt's jazz director and drummer David Morwood together in a high-powered team. Trumpeter Erik Jekabson does amazing and confident tunes on his new album; he'll do amazing, confident tunes 9:30pm Friday with pianist Sam Grobe-Heintz and drummer David Morwood. Saturday's highlight is at night, with Australian composer, arranger, conductor and sax player Andrew Speight on the roster with Matt Clark on piano and Michael Zisman on bass. Sunday, if you can stand more fabulous jazz music, opens with a Jazz Brunch set starting at 10am, with pianist Eddie Mendenhall supported by bassist Robb Fisher from the Cal Jader Band, and ends with guitarist Mike Lent from the Barry Manilow Orchestra, sax player Gary Meek, who's toured with Al Jerreau and Dionne Warwick, bassist Dan Robbins and drummer David Morwood.
