Both of these bands tell the kind of campfire folk stories where the Devil could be the man sitting at the end of the bar. San Diego’s The Silent Comedy plays in a familiar gritty “Wild West” style but can also elevate to bright and uplifting as on their sweeping “Footnotes” which sounds like the boys welcoming a new year while the confetti falls. Monterey’s own White Dogs continue to etch their names into the books as a noteworthy band with their “bare bones” folk songs. [LC]
