40th Next Generation Jazz Festival at Monterey

This competition/showcase of the best high school jazz musicians the Monterey Jazz Festival can find serves as not just a preview of the winning musicians, who will get a chance to perform at Monterey Jazz Festival, but a preview of the future of jazz. Kids from 10 states, including California, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania, share workshops, auditions, clinics and stages (including the Monterey Maritime and History Museum and Gilbert's Restaurant) with fellow young jazz heads from Japan. The MJF's Artist-in-Residence, two-time Grammy winner Joshua Redman will lead the young lions and significant musicians staff the judging, including pianist Alan Pasqua, drummer Peter Erskine, saxophonists Antonio Hart, Mary Fettig and others and The opening night concert (8pm Friday, Monterey Conference Center) kicks off the three-day free affair. 8:30pm Saturday, watch for a special top finalists showcase at the Conference Center, and peep the website for details.
