Battling against the death penalty through its support of moratorium and repeal movements, the American Civil Liberties Union, established in 1920, also educates and advocates. The Capital Punishment Project challenges the unfairness and arbitrary nature of capital punishment while working for its ultimate appeal. In the meantime, the focus is on improving fairness of capital trials and appeals as well as the quality of legal representation in an effort to reduce the number of defendants who face the death penalty.
