A pretty impressive but strikingly short run of repertory plays bursts out the gate of Western Stage's agile new (and youngish) theater company, 2x4. The company pushes out four seriously good plays in about five weeks (their David Mamet number, Oleanna, opens the day after this one), starting with None of the Above by Jenny Lyn Bader that TalkingBroadway.com calls "a clever educational suspense story." Its story, about a spoiled teen girl in the Upper West Side receiving SAT tutorship from a young man who, we discover, is her polar opposite, sounds like it shares lineage with other "educating" theater stories like My Fair Lady and Educating Rita, which all share ancestry with George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. The whole four-play season, in fact, shares a common theme: They are good works about young people. About time. [WR]
