Centuries of collective spiritual wisdom and tradition are accessible this Christmas season even to those who don't fear God, thanks to El Teatro Campesino's biennial performance of La Pastorela. In keeping with Spanish California folk tradition, this play follows the trek of shepherds who encounter a series of Odysseus-like obstacles as they search for Christ. This family-friendly pageant of color, song, dance and fable is part of a centuries-old tradition, here adapted by filmmaker and playwright Luis Valdez and directed by Adrian Torres. No need to slouch toward Bethlehem when you can let the musically gifted cast take you on a more entertaining journey in that same direction. [SR]
