Pacific Grove's Mozzo Kush, like the Central Coast's Population 5 and Modesto's Waking Wander (who tore up it up on the shell stage at the Fairgrounds at the anime convention), demolishes any negative connotations that "kid band" might carry. They rock with the dynamics of a new band near the convergence of freshness and experience, with moments of controlled melodic restraint, of guitar solos speeding out of control, of grown-up atmosphere. This from a band whose biggest presence so far—outside of their Oct. 22 Recycled Records CD release and signing—comes via wellsprings of youthful sources like YouTube, Soundcloud and BandCamp, and whose Facebook claims band interests as "eating quesadillas with Sprite and/or Coca Cola." Don't let that cutesy confession fool you. These four teen lads wield music of surprising power and depth. They liken themselves as a cross between Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes and that works for us. They play a few Monterey dates at different venues in quick succession: 7pm Dec. 10 at American Burger (738 Lighthouse Ave.), 8pm Dec. 16 at at Museum of Monterey, the day after Incubus' Brandon Boyd is slated to arrive (5 Custom House Plaza), and 7pm Dec. 22 at East Village Coffee Lounge (498 Washington St.).
