Held in conjunction with the massive Capital Case Defense Seminar taking place Feb. 18-21 at the Monterey Conference Center—and sponsored by the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the California Public Defenders Association—this party for the troops opposed to the death penalty adds levity and a socializing component to the heady fight to abolish the death penalty. Tickets to the event, in the San Carlos Ballroom, nab people entrance, dessert, a drink and performances by John Magnie of the Subdudes and Barry "The Fish" Melton and his band. Representatives from Death Penalty Focus, through whose efforts, it's been said, the eradication of the death penalty has "gone from fantasy to inevitable," will be there. And how about this for a piece of irony: Magic Circle Theatre in Carmel Valley opens their run of The Exonerated, the anti death penalty docu-drama, entirely uncoordinated with these events.
8pm doors open; 8:30-11pm party. Marriott Hotel, San Carlos Ballroom, Monterey. $45/advance (online until 3pm Fri, Feb. 18); $55/door. 415-243-0143, www.deathpenalty.org.
