A Tribute to Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? at Paper Wing Theatre

The Coen brothers' 2000 film musical comedy, loosely based on Homer's The Odyssey, is about a trio of musically-inclined escapees from a 1930s Mississippi prison called the Soggy Bottom Boys. On the run from the law while gaining notoriety for their music, they get into adventures and mishaps as they head to a hide-out to recover stolen loot. Filled with literary references, Southern culture, period details and pure playfulness, the film set off a little revival of 1930s and '20s oldtime bluegrass. Paper Wing is adept at adapting complex films to their intimate space, and this one looks more fun than the dark matter the theater company gravitates toward, with Lj Brewer playing the film's George Clooney-roled Everett, Michael Alliman as Pete, Matt Hanner as Delmar, a bluegrass band doing the music and Koly McBride directing the shebang. And the music is sweet as molasses. It runs to Feb. 26. [WR]
