As is the focal marine mammal of its name, this event is massive. So let's get right to it. This day-long joint effort to bolster marine conservation awareness and action starts pretty precociously at 9am with a scavenger hunt at Custom House Plaza for adults ($10), 5-12 year-olds ($5) and toddlers (free), with prizes up for grabs; and at 10am, a bocce ball double elimination tournament open to 12 and older at 10am (pre-register for $20 per). Then it opens up like a pinata spilling forth goodies like whale watching excursions, documentary and film screenings at Monterey History and Maritime Museum presented by BLUE (you remember them), tours of Pacific House and Custom House, a special concert from Barbara Joy and the La Mesa School Children's Chorus at the Wharf Theatre, and educational exhibits by folks from local orgs like the Cetacean Society and Surfrider, Camp Sea Lab and the Otter Project, Monterey Public Library and the Aquarium. It ends with a dance party 8-10pm upstairs at Gilbert's Restaurant with, appropriately, the Wharf Rats. [WR
