La Fanciulla del West Live from the Met at Century Cinemas

Puccini's opera set in the American wild west had its much-publicized world premiere at the Met in 1910. Scenes of saloon fights, card cheats, gold thiefs and men fighting over a woman provides all the rough and tumble color and intrigue of the Gold Rush era with all the refined style of an Italian opera. Brought live to the big screen for its centennial, American diva Deborah Voigt sings the title role of the "girl of the golden west," starring opposite Marcello Giordani. Nicola Luisotti conducts. There's an encore Jan. 26. [DVD]
