The smell of barbecue in the air, the memories cherished at parades and fairs, and the gatherings of families and friends indicates that 4th of July has arrived. To celebrate the occasion, the city of Monterey hosts an admission free event. Local talents like Monterey Community Band, Papa Doo Run Run, Shane Dwight and Pop Fiction take care of music. Kids enjoy free face painting, balloon characters, jump houses and carnival booths. And when hunger strikes, families refuel on grub bought from non-profit food vendors or personal picnic lunches. No firework this year, due to budget constraints. Pets and alcohol prohibited. [CK]
