Monterey National Horse Show at Monterey County Fairgrounds

Forget those images of braided ponies prancing around in front of a tea-sipping crowd. This Western-style horse show brings together young riders from across the peninsula hoping to prove their mettle in events like ranch sorting, where teams of two race against the clock to separate numbered cattle into the correct pen. The weekend-long event is headlined on Friday evening by a performance from the renowned (and enormously mustachioed) cowboy poet and humorist Baxter Black, who promises philosophical musings “as deep as a boot heel in the mud” and anecdotes “as handy as pockets in your underwear.” A basic burger-and-beer barbecue dinner on Saturday benefiting the Heritage Foundation features a silent auction, "goodtime tunes" by classic rock cover band Wild Turkeys, and the crowning of the first ever Miss Monterey National Horse Show.
