Natalie Dessay plays the perky and vibrant role of Marie in this opéra comique titled La Fille du Régiment. Although full of laughs and ultimately lighthearted, it is set against the backdrop of war and touches on the serious subject of love and how social class can attempt to separate two people who have fallen for each other. With Marco Armiliato conducting, the music starts off strong when tenor Juan Diego Flórez reaches the peek of pitch in "Ah, mes amis" containing 9 high Cs. [NH]
