Carmel Bach Festival Open Rehearsals

More than a hundred musicians are already settled into Carmel for rehearsals in local churches and the Sunset Center a week before the concerts begin. Conductor Paul Goodwin opens these fine-tuning rehearsals to the public, giving listeners a rare opportunity to hear classics like Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 and Bach's Johannes-Passion for free. Plus, Goodwin wears a mic, allowing for insight into his musical direction and commentary, and a glimpse into last-minute imperfections. Festival Dramaturge David Gordon introduces each open rehearsal 30 minutes before start times in the Sunset Center lobby. Also open are working sessions for master class fellows, who've been intensively refining their craft with resident stars. [SR]

Locations and times vary. Six free events July 8-14; $39/chamber concert July 13. For complete schedule, visit www.bachfestival.org. 624-1521.
