Cowboys & Cabernet Cowboy Poetry & Wine Tasting at Steinbeck Institute

According to Tony Argento, “Once you get a transfusion of cowboy poetry in your blood, you’ll be hooked for life. That’s what happened to me.” The folksy entertainer has been reciting classic verses about gunfighters, ranchers and drifters since the age of 5, and he’ll take to the stage once again for the 24th annual edition of this rhymes-and-wines event, which helps kick off the California Rodeo. Headlined by Western music star Belinda Gail, the concert brings together artists and musicians like local poet Clem Albertoni, as well as any aspiring performers who want to show off their skills during the open mic portion. The show is preceded by a barbecue ($15/person) and wine tasting ($10/person), and a portion of all proceeds will benefit the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries. [AK]

Barbecue and wine tasting: 5pm; concert: 6pm. Steinbeck Institute of Art and Culture, 940 N. Main Street, Salinas. $30. 775-3100, www.carodeo.com.
