Western Stage's shiny new, grimy little experimental theater company, 2x4 (don't ask us what it means), launches its very first production of its very first season, and they're batting for the part of the bleachers where the angry metalheads, gloomy goths, literary misfits and other outcasts hang out. Actually, they're aiming for a younger audience hungry for gritty and meaty stuff from theater but not fat of wallet, and judging by their line-up—four fresh plays that visit in brief repertory bursts—they might be onto something. The first is Oleanna by David Mamet, a two-person drama in an academic student/teacher setting that eddies into themes of miscommunication, sexual harassment and political correctness. And because it's Mamet, you can bet that the language will not be pretty or polite. As an experimental aside, 10 seats in the back of this theater-in-the-round production will be reserved for people who are invited to Tweet and Facebook while the show is in progress. Interesting, no? Distracting, maybe? Oleanna trades weekend days with None of the Above by Jenny Lyn Bader, so watch carefully. [WR]
