The Bach Festival's mission is no less ambitious than igniting a spark of creativity, and its expansive program of artists living and long-dead promises to exceed even the highest expectations for creative inspiration. Concertmaster Peter Hanson leads an evening of 18th-century string music, featuring Baroque favorites like Vivaldi and Purcell, for those with an ear for Bach's contemporaries. Then pianist Stephen Prutsman transcends boundaries to play Bach, Coltrane and Gillespie—all in the same show. Conductor Paul Goodwin leads an orchestra through Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 and a concerto for renowned sax player Joe Lovano. Over two weeks, this multimedia program (films, lectures, poetry to music) brings centuries' worth of music to life through 45 concerts, making Bach relevant and presenting a sweeping, thorough history of western music.
