Camera Obscura's not just the name of a beloved indie band. It's also the name for a type of camera that projects inverted images on a flat surface, and has been used since the 13th century for everything from viewing solar eclipses to sketching perspective drawings. Photographer and video artist Greg Mettler has constructed a camera obscura-like installation, its exterior mimicking the weathered look of buildings on Fort Ord and Cannery Row that uses video to envelop viewers in a 360-degree experience of Monterey County. If you're scratching your head while trying to picture this, just trust us: you have to see it to believe it. On Thursday, July 21, enjoy the stuff at the free (donations appreciated, though) Art After Hours party, appointed with wine, apps and live music.
5-7pm After Hours reception; Museum hours 11am-5pm Wed-Sat and 1-4pm Sun. Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific, 559 Pacific St., Monterey. Opening reception free; Museum admission $10/adult, $5/students and military, Free/children 12 and under and museum members. 372-5477, www.montereyart.org.
