When a festival involves no fewer than five dozen wineries like Bonny Doon and De Tierra and a bundle of restaurants like India Clay Oven and Monterey Cookhouse, it's saying something when the wine gets outshined by the soup. But such is the affection for clam chowder and the crazy value represented by a West Coast Chowder Competition Saturday that runs only $20, or about a buck per taste of professional chowder, with scores of wines to try too, plus other live music and swag elements. Not that the other parts of the party are anything to spit out: a Friday evening grand tasting provides a delicious and ambitious double-venue endeavor with oyster bars, tastes from a range of restaurants and food providers, and champagne shuttles between the remarkable MMA-La Mirada and the Hyatt Regency. Not a bad way to toast 35 years of MWF. [MCA]
