Characters in Greek myths descend into the tempting realms of violence and despair so that we don’t have to, and their stories are as poignant today as they were in the 6th century BC, when the first fragmentary reference to Orpheus was made. MacArthur genius award winner Sarah Ruhl retells the treacherous tale of Orpheus’ return to the underworld through the perspective of his love, Eurydice, in modern terms. The decision to look back at her, after Hades’ conditions stipulated he not do so, wasn’t entirely simple in Ruhl’s telling, even as the lovers risked losing each other forever. PacRep’s artistic director, Kenneth Kelleher, breathes fresh life into the ancient tale with guest and resident cast members. [SR]
