Family Fiesta at Mission San Juan Bautista

When Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuén left Spain in 1758 bound for America, he would've been hopeful that the missions he was to build would still be conducting mass today, and indeed, Mission San Juan Bautista celebrates its 214th anniversary this year, with an annual fiesta honoring St. John the Baptist. After mass, Aztec dancers will lead a procession through town to the olive grove for a day of family-friendly games, raffles and contemporary Mexican music. San Juan Bautista already has an old-timey (as in 18th-century) vibe, so this homage to the past will likely impart a more modern vibe than this scenic town usually has. [SR]
