Gaetano Donizetti's opera buffa, or comic opera, was first performed in 1843 and has since made frequent showings at the world's opera houses. When young Ernesto (played by Matthew Polenzani) wants to marry the lovely, penniless Norina (played by superstar soprano Anna Netrebko), Ernesto's rich, unmarried uncle Don Pasquale (John Del Carlo) protests, insisting that he find a wealthier bride. Ernesto refuses, and the incensed Pasquale decides that he shall find a bride of his own, so that he can produce more sensible heirs, and the timeless comedy unfolds. Co-stars include Mariusz Kwiecien; James Levine conducts. [DS]
