Verdi Opera at Select Theaters

The name is quite revealing: Boccanegra is Italian for "black mouth" perhaps better translated as "evil speak". Verdi's operatic work "Simon Boccanegra" is a classic tale of tragedy and strangely interwoven family ties. Inspired by fractious historic events of 14th century Italy--a time when jealousy, power, and deceit reigned--this is a story that, unlike some of its characters, will never die. Adorned in brilliant costumes and striding around extravagantly constructed stage sets, world renowned Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo performes the lead role of Doge Boccanegra. James Levine conducts the symphony orchestra with other acclaimed operatic singers to include soprano by Adrianne Pieczonka. [NH]
