Metropolitan Opera's Nixon in China at Century Cinemas

Part of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series, this is a pretty monumental opera, and it’s the Met’s first crack at it. It’s considered the first serious contemporary American (in English) minimalist opera to show the way for one possible future of the art form. The composer, John Adams (Pulitzer for a symphony ode to 9/11) is a contemporary of Philip Glass and is making music that’s arty but accessible, acclimating audiences to their new classical music through movies and popular entertainment, so if you hear their serious work, you’re halfway acquainted. The Guardian stated that "Nixon in China has been arguably the most influential opera of the past 20 years.” When it came out, though, in 1987, it was dismissed by many as simplistic. Apparently, the Met doesn't think so. Do not miss this one (but if you do, an encore comes March 2) [WR]
10am Sat Feb. 12 live broadcast; 6:30pm March 2 encore. Century Cinemas, 1700 Del Monte Center, Monterey. $24/adult; $22/senior; $16/child; discount on March 2 encore. 800-326-3264. http://www.cinemark.com.
