El Teatro crams two zany social critique plays of feminine feistiness into one night (just wait; later this season they stack three in one performance), both from the pen of Josefina Lopez, the scribe of Real Women Have Curves. The first, Simply Maria: or The American Dream, is a coming-of-age comedy about a young girl in Los Angeles who believes the sky is the limit for her ambitions--until she grows up and into the traditional expectations of her parents, who want her to marry, have kids, and dutifully serve them. Her twin allegiances, to herself and her parents' wishes, throws her into a symbolic dream of absurd but highly relevant conflict. The second number, Food for the Dead, is about a widow, Candela, who continues to pay respect on Dia de los Muertos to her domineering former husband, nine years after his death, while growing into her own person with her own ideas. When her son brings home a gay lover, the spirit of Candela's husband returns to whup some ass, but finds that the family, and the times, are changed. It runs through April 3. [WR]
