This stage version of the morality tale, based on Anthony Burgess' nihilistic, futuristic and ultimately hopeful novel—though it's beholden, as all reference to A Clockwork Orange will be, to Stanley Kubrick—is about a gang of young hoodlums who live to rampage and plunder the British landscape, unchecked by ineffectual authority figures or by moral or humanistic impulses. One, though, gets caught and drawn into a new government program that repulses the subject to acts or even thoughts of violence—a thought police in the brain. And that sets up Burgess' big question, one that resonates in today's post-9/11 country: How much of our freedoms are we willing to sacrifice for security? The retro-stylings in the costumes, music and made-up language are counter-culture icons, and the violence (and nudity) will weed out the meek and judgmental The rest, though, might be up to Paper Wing's challenge of questioning ourselves and our government about where the line, if it exists, should be drawn.
