If you don't know about Victor Jara, you probably should—the late Chilean singer-songwriter, director, poet, teacher, activist and ultimately, martyr, became a symbol for human rights and social justice in his native Latin America, having lived a life of peace only to suffer a brutal, violent death. His story comes alive in this play with music, written and co-directed by Lakin Valdez, who also plays the lead. Valdez traveled to Santiago, Chile in 2010 to meet with Jara's friends and colleagues, research that Valdez calls "critical to the vitality of the play." The show will feature live music with songs by Jara and other famed Latin American songwriters, promising a synergistic combination of rhythm and a life well-lived. Says folk-legend Pete Seeger: "As long as we sing his songs, as long as his courage can inspire us to greater courage, Victor Jara will never die." [DS]
