Bel Kaufman's 1965 novel, Up the Down Staircase, was a critical and commercial success. Time magazine called it "easily the most popular novel about U.S. public schools in history." It tells the story of a young, idealistic teacher at a "gritty" urban school in New York, whose ideals are tested by students who don't seem to care about their own education and an administration that is absurdly authoritarian. But the issues go deeper—and reaches closer to our modern climate—with examinations of overcrowding, dilapidated facilities, troubled kids, budget problems and burnt out staff. Christopher Sergel's stage adaptation, here, is directed by TWS's Jeff McGrath. [WR]
